George Norman had originally enlisted in 1888, and had served continously until 1909, and had fought in the Tirah 1897 to 1898, and in South Africa, and had been mentioned in despatches. He held a gymnastic certificate and was a qualified instructor of musketry. At the outbreak of war in 1914, he rejoined the army and ‘recruited a battalion of 1,000 miners for the Army.’ He was anxious to go to the front but was retained as a Company Sergeant Major and drill and musketry instructor at the Depot.
1911 Census: George Norman was a 43 year old school caretaker and Army Pensioner, residing at 92, Hatton Gardens, Newark, Nottinghamshire. He was the husband of Louise Norman (42) and the father of Lily (11), Charles (7), Eveline (5) and Ethel (3).
